Who is a tech PR?

I would compare a tech PR professional to a life coach for gadget and tech companies, guiding them toward their goal of connecting with their audience and shaping brand perception. It’s the intersection where tech innovation meets strategic communication, working together to elevate a brand’s image. Tech PR professionals work for tech companies to maintain positive relationships with the media, stakeholders, and the public, ensuring their clients are always in the spotlight for the right reasons. They are the driving force behind positioning technology companies as industry leaders.

Consider the Big 5: Do you think tech innovations alone have elevated these companies to their industry-leading positions? Not entirely. PR professionals are the masterminds who shape brand value and perception. They achieve this through strategies like product launches, event management, crisis management, drafting campaigns, managing social media engagement, storytelling, content creation, strategic communication, media relations, and influencer collaborations. Without PR professionals, these companies wouldn’t just struggle to communicate their innovations — they might fail to connect with their audience entirely.

Why understanding the tech landscape as a PR professional is important?

Let’s investigate an example of a recent crisis in the tech industry. Crowdstrike, a cybersecurity company that provides security solutions to various sectors, including retail, healthcare, airlines, energy, and financial services, is known for its robust security measures. However, on July 19, 2024, a faulty update to their Falcon Sensor software caused a global IT outage, affecting millions of Windows systems worldwide.

As a communication professional managing this crisis, it’s crucial to understand the technical aspects of why this mistake happened in the first place. The root cause of the crash was a software update that triggered an out-of-bound memory read, meaning the software program attempted to access memory outside its allocated area. As a tech PR professional, understanding these technical details is vital, as it helps you explain the issue to the public through the media in a clear, transparent manner, maintaining trust during the crisis.

To simplify, imagine a row of mailboxes outside your house. You are allowed to open only your mailbox, right? But what if you accidentally opened someone else’s mailbox? In technical terms, you are the program, and the mailboxes represent memory spaces. When the program attempts to access unauthorized memory, it causes the system to crash, resulting in the infamous Blue Screen of Death. This is exactly what happened with the software update — it caused the program to read memory outside its designated area, leading to widespread system crashes.

Understanding the tech landscape as a tech PR professional is crucial because a well-informed PR team can simplify complex concepts for stakeholders, the media, and the public. They can also reassuringly handle the crisis, demonstrating that the company is taking responsibility and acting swiftly to resolve the issue.

What do you need to know about technology as a tech PR?

Technology is all about invention and making things easier to access, which positions industries and businesses as leaders in the market. For tech PR professionals, understanding technology is the key to crafting effective and meaningful communication. Having a basic knowledge of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, data analytics, blockchain, IoT, cloud computing, and cybersecurity is essential. This knowledge not only equips you to communicate complex ideas but also allows you to present your client’s products and services in a way that connects with and adds value to tech-savvy customers.
Technical knowledge can significantly simplify your role when collaborating with developers, engineers, or product teams. While you don’t need to be an expert, understanding how software, apps, or digital tools work enables you to ask the right questions and craft precise messages. This technical understanding helps you transform complex details into simple, relatable stories that resonate deeply with customers, media professionals, and the public. In the end, it’s this clarity and relatability that strengthens your PR strategies and amplifies your clients’ impact in the tech world.

Tech companies and how they sell their products through PR

We all know Apple is a fascinating brand and an industry leader when it comes to gadgets and devices. But do you know what truly makes Apple stand out? It’s their ability to build anticipation before every product launch masterfully. Apple creates an electrifying hype among customers, grabs media attention, and strategically promotes sales long before their products hit the shelves. Their PR team thrives as experts in branding, conveying key messages and elegant stories that resonate with a wide audience. Apple also fosters strong relationships with media outlets, journalists, and influencers, ensuring their stories receive maximum exposure. A great example of Apple’s PR genius is turning every product launch into a global event, from cryptic teaser campaigns to live-streamed keynotes that captivate millions worldwide.

Another fascinating example of effective PR in the tech industry is Microsoft’s Build conference, a three-day event held from May 21 to May 23, where the company unveiled ground-breaking advancements, particularly in AI. Microsoft’s PR team ensured the event was a resounding success by strategically inviting journalists, tech bloggers, and influencers to attend. They provided exclusive access to announcements, product demos, and interviews with top experts, making the conference a hub for influential voices in the tech world. As a result, the event gained widespread coverage in leading media outlets and social platforms, effectively positioning Microsoft as a leader in cutting-edge technology while sparking excitement among developers and the public.

Intel, one of the most influential technology companies globally, executed a stellar PR campaign with their Experience Amazing initiative. The campaign highlighted how their processors made a tangible difference in people’s lives through relatable and inspiring stories. Intel’s PR team avoided technical jargon and instead created compelling visuals that showcased real-world applications of their technology. For example, they featured students using virtual reality headsets powered by Intel to explore historical landmarks or underwater ecosystems, making learning more immersive. Another powerful visual highlighted how doctors leveraged AI powered by Intel processors to analyze medical data and deliver life-saving diagnoses faster. By focusing on these emotionally engaging stories, Intel’s PR team effectively connected their technology to everyday human impact, creating a campaign that was both relatable and memorable.

All of this to say…

The tech industry thrives on innovation, but without effective communication, even ground-breaking advancements can fail to resonate. A Tech PR professional plays a vital role in translating technical complexities into stories that connect with audiences, maintain trust, and safeguard brand reputation. Whether managing crises like Crowdstrike’s software issue or building excitement through campaigns like Apple’s product launches and Intel’s storytelling, Tech PR goes beyond simply promoting products; it ensures technology is understood, valued, and embraced. By combining technical knowledge with strategic communication, tech PR professionals don’t just support the tech industry; they help it lead, inspire, and thrive.
